The Immaculate Conception High School softball team has won league and state titles over the last few years, but it has not won a Bergen County crown.
For junior pitcher Sarah Piening, winning the school’s first county championship is a goal.
The third-seeded Immaculate Conception squad moved closer to that mission as the Blue Wolves defeated fellow Community News area school and 14th-seeded, Fair Lawn, 6-3, on Saturday in Saddle Brook.
“We’re ready to play and we are focused on it,” said Piening, who scattered six hits in a complete game and struck out seven Fair Lawn batters. “This is our mission.”
Immaculate Conception will look to get to the county semi-finals when it takes on sixth-seeded Northern Highlands on Sunday at IHA at 4 p.m. Ironically, the Lady Blue Wolves faced Highlands last season in the quarterfinals with the same seeding – third against sixth. For this season Immaculate Conception will be looking to avenge a 5-2 loss to the Highlanders.
Tthe 12-4 Immaculate Conception squad might be more battle tested this year. The Lady Blue Wolves have had a tougher schedule and Piening believes it has helped her and her team.
