Lyndhurst captured its second North 2, Group 1 boys championship at Ridge High School in Basking Ridge, by a 136-104 margin over Shabazz, and a 74-72 win.
Lyndhurst didn’t need any late heroics to win, but there were heroics nonetheless. The Golden Bears had just seen Shabazz pull close after a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200. Billy Hooper (who missed Friday’s 1,600 with illness) and Andre Francisco went 1-3 in the 3,200 and combined with the 2-3-4 finish in the discus, putting the meet away for Lyndhurst.
“All of our kids had big days and really picked us up when things were looking difficult,” said Lyndhurst coach Tom Shoebridge. “[Friday] we went 1-4 in the pole vault right after Shabazz scored big in a couple of events and it kept us in it.”
