LYNDHURST – Vin Dorio is following in the footsteps of his brother, Anthony Dorio. Vin decided to take his baseball cleats to William Paterson University, where his brother Anthony toiled just a few years ago. Anthony’s last year at WPU was the 2012 season so it will be like old home week when Vin steps onto the diamond at the Wayne school.
The Lyndhurst High School graduate was named to the All Bergen County baseball team for his work this past season. He was encouraged by his brother to go to William Paterson University.
There are definitely similarities between the brothers.
“They both are very alike and have similar build and work ethic,” said William Paterson head coach Michael Lauterhahn, who also coached Anthony. “I think he (Vin) just does a solid job at second base and hits for contact from the left side. He’s been part of the family for a long time.”
The only difference might be that Anthony was a shortstop at William Paterson while Vin was a second baseman for Lyndhurst for three of his four years as a Bear.
His visit ratified the feelings his family and he have for the university.
“When I went to visit the school, I fell in love with the college campus,” said Vin. “When I talked to coach (Michael) Lauterhahn, I just liked how the program was run and was excited about joining the team. I wanted to go away, but wanted to be close to home.”
While WPU seemed to be his destination, Vin said that he looked at Centenary College, Seton Hall University and Rutgers-Newark University, all in New Jersey.
Vin understands that despite the family history, he is not guaranteed a spot on the field. “He [coach] said that you have to earn a spot on the field,” said Vin Dorio. “I talked to other players who said that you start at one position and then play another position in the end.”
