North 1, Group 1
Paterson Charter 47, Hasbrouck Heights 46
Senior center Reggie Warren’s rebound and putback at the buzzer lifted second-seeded Paterson Charter over 10th-seeded Hasbrouck Heights in the North 1, Group 1 boys quarterfinals at Paterson.
Junior guard Dazmir Staton’s jumper missed and was rebounded by Warren. Warren’s shot rolled around the rim as the buzzer sounded before falling in for the Lions.
Junior Leeroy Casimir led the Aviators with 18 points in the loss. Paterson Charter faces 11th-seeded Cresskill on Friday.
CRESSKILL 54, BOGOTA 36 (at Bogota): Sophomore forward Luka Radovich had 16 points and 16 rebounds as the 11th-seeded Cougars upset the third-seeded Buccaneers. Cresskill outscored Bogota, 34-18, in the second half to complete the upset.
PARK RIDGE 46, EMERSON 37 (at Park Ridge): Senior forward Glen Hafemeister had 10 of his 12 points in the second half as the top-seeded Owls defeated the eighth-seeded Cavaliers.
Verona 58, Palisades Park 51 (at Verona):The Verona boys basketball team’s quest for a state championship lives on after the No. 4 Hillbillies secured a 58-51 overtime victory over No. 5 Palisades Park in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA state tournament Wednesday, March 2 at Verona High School.
Palisades Park rallied to tie the game in the fourth quarter and sent the game into overtime, but Verona outscored the Tigers 9-2 in the extra period to secure a semifinals matchup against top-ranked Park Ridge Friday night.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
NORTH 1, GROUP 1
MIDLAND PARK 47, BUTLER 31 (at Midland Park): Senior forward Thalia Ghalam had 17 points, 12 rebounds and three steals as the fourth-seeded Panthers defeated the 12th-seeded Bulldogs. Sophomore forward Sofia Hansen added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Bulldogs, who face eighth-seeded Cresskill on Friday.
Cresskill 42, Saddle Brook 34 (at Saddle Brook) — Erin McQuillen felt the weight of the moment on her shoulders as she approached the free throw line.Her team was 36 seconds away from upsetting the top seed. And her next two shots could be the knockout blow.
As McQuillen stepped to the line, she tuned off the crowd, turned off the pressure and took a second to think of the fundamentals.
Then the 82 percent free throw shooter hit a pair of shots, one as smooth as the next.
The free throws helped Cresskill get its biggest win of the season, a 42-34 road victory over Saddle Brook in the North 1, Group 1 girls basketball state quarterfinals Wednesday.
NORTH 2, GROUP 1
SECAUCUS 67, DAYTON 55 (at Secaucus): Sophomore forward Lindsey Mack had nine of her 18 points in the third quarter as the third-seeded Patriots defeated the sixth-seeded Bulldogs.
