* Becton junior WR/S Joe Emerson has had “added responsibility” in recent weeks and has “flourished,” coach Jack Maher said. Against Rutherford two weeks ago, Emerson had eight catches for 144 yards and seven tackles. Against Park Ridge in the North 1 Group 1 playoffs, he had eight carries for 41 yards and two TDs, three catches for 78 yards and one passing TD while serving as a Wildcat-formation QB. Becton will meet New Milford on Friday in the North 1 Group 1 semifinals.
* New Milford senior RB Christian Correa will enter the Knights’ North 1, Group 1 semifinal matchup against Becton with 2,053 rushing yards — 23 yards shy of breaking Dante Tobler’s school record of 2,075 set in 2012. Correa rushed for 260 yards in New Milford’s first-round win over Belvidere and already has broken the school record for touchdowns in a season with 31, including three last week. He has scored at least twice in every game this season.
* Hasbrouck Heights won the NJIC championship as a member of the Meadowlands Division and it was the only division of the four to produce two winners in the opening weekend of the state playoffs. Cresskill won against Boonton and will meet the Aviators for a second time this season after falling to them, 34-6, on Sept. 30. The Colonial went 1-2 (Rutherford won, Waldwick/Midland Park and Glen Rock lost), the Liberty went 1-2 (New Milford won, Pompton Lakes and Harrison lost) and the Patriot went 1-1 (Becton won, Park Ridge lost), although the Patriot teams played each other.
* From 2010-2015, NJIC teams went 1-10 against Big North teams in the playoffs. The lone win was when No. 1 New Milford defeated No. 8 Westwood in 2010. This year, NJIC teams went 2-3 against NJSFC teams, with Cresskill and Rutherford winning. Waldwick/Midland Park, Glen Rock and Pompton Lakes lost in cross-conference matchups.
