Around the court
►Glen Rock has arguably its best team in years and opened last week with back-to-back wins over Pompton Lakes and Butler in NJIC Division 1.
The Panthers’ senior class is the key: forwards Will McLoughlin and Michael Silver are averaging double figures scoring, G Connor Cunningham is a stellar defender, PG Ryan Baumbach provides leadership and center Andy Martin works the paint.
“We’ve been waiting for this year for four years,” coach Jason Mittelman said, “because we have a good senior class and we also have a good group of juniors.”
►Pompton Lakes (3-2) opened the season with three victories for the first time in at least 15 years, thanks to NJIC Division 1 wins over Butler, Hawthorne and Eastern Christian.
Junior Adam Campbell and senior Quadir Williams are averaging double figures scoring. Junior Ben Gordon had double-doubles in each of those first three wins. The Cardinals have held all five opponents to less than 50 points.
“The kids have been great,” coach Ryan McCleery said. “They’ve bought into everything with the changes and the protocols, and we’re just happy to be here every day, and we’re trying to get better every day, and we’ve been able to do that.”
