SADDLE BROOK — For several years the Saddle Brook girls basketball team has been close to winning a league title.

That was the case last year and the last few years, but this has been the case for several years even dating back to the old Bergen Passaic Scholastic League where the likes of the old Paterson Catholic, Eastern Christian and other schools kept the Lady Falcons from winning.

On the surface and in print, the 2016-17 season does not look like the year that Saddle Brook will finally break the door down, but not everything on print turns out to be reality.

“We haven’t won the league championship in a long time,” said Saddle Brook head coach Darren White. “We have come in second place a lot and it’s frustrating.”

Coming into this season White had to replace four graduated seniors including Cherie Smedile, a thousand point scorer, for a team that finished with a 20-6 record and have been 60-17 the last three seasons.

While an NJIC Meadowlands Division title is on the docket, there is also the goal of matching the 20 victories of last season and had started at 2-1 in the early going.

For White he said that they are looking down the line, but for the next game.

“We’re thinking about the next game and to get better every day,” said White who added he doesn’t think his team will hit all cylinders until mid-January. “We should be playing better by mid-season as new roles are defined.”
