The Secaucus High School boys cross-country team captured the Varsity C Divisional Championship at the Annual Bergen County Season Opener Invitational Meet on Saturday.

The Patriots complied 58 points to finish ahead of second place Bogota (65) and third place Pompton Lakes (83). There were 12 schools in the division.

Chris Panepinto was the first finisher for Secaucus in 10th place with a time of 17:55 over the Darlington Park 5K course in Mahwah. Sean Jeffas was 11th (18:05); Alfredo Rebaza placed 13th (18:13); Matt Olive was 16th (18:21); Sondy Polanco finished 21st (18:38) and Shaun O’Brien sealed the victory with 24th place (18:42).

Sophomore Samantha Nesheiwat led the Patriot girls to a fifth place team finish. Her time of 21:49 was good for a sixth place individual medal in the field of 50 runners. Joe Mancuso placed 30th in the JV division with a 21:18 performance. The race had 111 finishers.

“We are very pleased with what we see so far in our early season development,” said Coach Stan Fryczynski. “This is a great start, but we have more work to do and can really build on this,” he added.

The 4-0 boys and 3-2 girls have a NJIC divisional meet this Wednesday against the Blue Tide of Harrison at Garrett Mountain Reservation.
