Secaucus HS

As the two tallest players on a Secaucus team severely lacking in size, guards Amanda Ulrich and Lindsey Mack know that they will lose the battle on the boards most of the times they take the court.

However, they and their teammates know that they can overcome such a disadvantage with good defense, clutch shot making and grit.

“We knew that in order to win this game we had to really step up, make our shots and really box out because we are smaller than a lot of other teams,” said Mack.

With Mack and Ulrich both hot from the perimeter, the fifth-seeded Patriots were able to do just that. The duo combined to hit 10-pointers, while Ulrich and older sister Kristina made 11 consecutive free throws in the fourth quarter, to lift Secaucus to a 60-51 victory over fourth-seeded North Bergen in the Hudson County Tournament quarterfinals in North Bergen last night.

Secaucus (18-5) will face the winner of today’s Bayonne-Hudson Catholic game in the semifinals on Wednesday at Saint Peter’s University. It is the sixth consecutive year the Patriots have reached the semifinals as they seek to defend their title.
