The winningest girls volleyball program in North Jersey added another record to its collection on Nov. 16.
Secaucus made a Sunday statement with its 25-13, 25-9, 25-5 victory over Raritan in the Group 1 final at Franklin High School. That brought the program its NJSIAA-record 20th state championship all-time and first since 2014.
The Patriots of 11 years ago set a program record with 33 wins before bowing in the Tournament of Champions semifinals. Since the TOC is no more, this season’s squad ends with a 29-2 mark.
Secaucus is 83-9 over the past three seasons, as fifth-year coach Dylan Caruso has guided it to three Hudson County titles, two sectional crowns and a Group 1 trophy.
“The big thing when I took over the program was to get the girls to understand and realize that it’s not just about the six of us on the court at any given moment – or the 12 girls on the team,” Caruso said via phone on the bus ride home. “The tradition of Secaucus volleyball is so much more.
“We’ve spent countless hours looking through yearbooks, and they’re seeing their friends’ moms or older sisters as state champions. They look at the plaques and the gold trophies in the hallways. And this group was just like, ‘That’s what we want’.”
The Patriots played that way, too.
Raritan (18-8) led the first set, 4-2, before Secaucus ripped off a 15-2 run. The winners jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second set and did not allow the Rockets to tally consecutive points in the third.
Senior outside hitter Sofia Guzman had her second straight dominant double-double with 24 kills and 16 digs. Classmate Olivia Jasiczek was monstrous in the middle with 17 kills and two blocks.
Setter Sarah Veloz (33 assists) and OH Isabella Pablos served three aces apiece, while libero Avalyn Torres and defensive specialist Apollonia “Apple” Dicanio combined for 18 digs and three aces.
“On any given day, any of them could be the MVP, not only of our team but for the entire state,” Caruso said. “And that’s what makes it all the more special.”
According to historical data reported to NorthJersey.com, Secaucus’ all-time record in volleyball is now 1,038-194, good for an .843 winning percentage.
