GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL
With the rapid growth of high school girls flag football – and the impending sponsorship by the NJSIAA starting in 2027 – NorthJersey.com is introducing team rankings this spring.
There are 37 Bergen and Passaic schools with programs, and those are the main counties encompassing the traditional Bergen Record “North Jersey” coverage area. The simplest method for most sports is to use a pool of teams that includes the entire Big North and North Jersey Interscholastic Conference (plus independents), even if that includes a handful of exceptions for other counties.
With tackle and flag football, the Super Football Conference brings schools from the entire northern New Jersey region into the mix. So for the first season of rankings, at least, the pool will include any league/division that features a Bergen or Passaic county team. The full divisional breakdown follows the rankings.
There will be a bi-weekly Top 10 for the first season. As the sport expands, the number of ranked teams may expand as well.
NorthJersey.com used information from head coaches – plus knowledge of program histories and players – in assembling the first Top 10.
Where teams stand early in the season does not necessarily reflect where they will end up. Some coaches, in fact, prefer to fly under the radar (and have told us as much). Others like to see their teams get votes to help pump up the players (ditto).
Whatever you take out of the rankings, know that things always can change in a couple weeks.
