RUTHERFORD – The St. Mary wrestling program is taking baby steps with the hope of making bigger steps in the future.

Head coach Glen Cannici, a Gaels alum, is hoping that some of the success the team has had this season with a 3-6 dual match record will lead to more wrestlers and bigger success in the future.

Cannici has some experienced wrestlers including junior Thomas Cruz, junior Shawn Sodora, sophomore Aaron Dunn and senior Nick Kovacs, all who were All North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Division 3 wrestlers last season and are back this season.

Cannici is hoping those four wrestlers and some of his new ones go far in the state district and regional individual tournaments at the end of the season.

“That is all that we’re looking for and keeping an eye on that,” said Cannici hoping to get some wrestlers down to the state individual finals at Atlantic City.

St. Mary has defeated Tenafly, Hudson Catholic and neighborhood rival, Rutherford, so far this season. “They are all good wins,” said Cannici.

But the Gaels know they still have a lot of work to do after losing 63-9 to Hawthorne on January 14.
