POMPTON LAKES – Tradition and history are words that carry a lot of meaning within the halls of Pompton Lakes High School.

On Friday night the Pompton Lakes wrestling team added to the schools history as they won the North 1, Group 1 sectional championship when they knocked off Cedar Grove 39-28.

The sectional championship was the first in the Pompton Lakes wrestling programs history.

“It is amazing. I have been working my whole life in wrestling for this,” said Pompton Lakes senior Nico Negrini. “So many people were here to see us win our first sectional title.”

“This is a long time coming. This is great,” said Pompton Lakes head coach Scott Mahoney. “There are a lot of guys here that wrestled for this program and we know how hard it is to move the program forward and to get to this point is awesome.”In a gym filled to capacity the Cardinals did not take long to give their fans something to cheer about.

Sal Negrini got the night started when he won the 170-pound bout with a 7-4 win.

Nico Negrini then took the mat and won with a second period pin that further whipped the Cardinals fans into a frenzy.

“The whole purpose of the season was to go out there and get a state sectional title,” said Nico Negrini.
